An honest account from a pioneering figure in modern journalism.
By Gay Talese ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 19, 2023
In his latest memoir, celebrated writer Gay Talese recounts his journey from copy boy at the New York Times to successful journalist. He was drawn to writing about people who work largely unnoticed, such as electricians and boardwalk chair operators. With the support of editors at the Times and Esquire, Talese wrote about non-newsworthy people, including Alden Whitman and Nita Naldi. He also recounts his failed attempt to interview Frank Sinatra for Esquire, which resulted in the iconic article “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold”. Talese also delved into the worlds of massage parlors and nudist colonies for his book Thy Neighbor’s Wife, and wrote about motel owner Gerald Foos in The Voyeur’s Motel. His research for the latter book also included the life of Nicholas Bartha, a physician who burned down his Upper East Side brownstone. Talese’s memoir offers readers a glimpse into his life and work, and those who are already familiar with his work will find new insights.
