In his nonfiction debut sports book, White takes a side-by-side look at the careers of two of professional golf’s greatest figures, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. He focuses on Nicklaus’ career from 1962 to 1986 and Woods’ from 1996 to 2022, noting that although the latter missed some years due to injuries, the ages during their ranges were similar. The author centers his comparative account on the Grand Slam, but he also looks at many other elements of the two careers, such as Nicklaus winning the Ohio State Open at age 16, qualifying for the U.S. Open at 17, and winning the U.S. Amateur Championship at 19. White provides exhaustive stats on both figures, presented in charts and graphs. He also demonstrates narrative skill and picks excellent epigraphs, including Nicklaus’ great line: “Professional golf is the only sport where, if you win 20% of the time, you’re the best.” While the book is sure to be loved by stats-saturated golf enthusiasts, others may wish for more narrative analysis to accompany the data.
