A veteran cognitive behavioral therapist and clinical psychologist has written a book to help readers achieve a deeper and more lasting satisfaction than just happiness. Guttman’s program is based on the “six core techniques of sustainable life satisfaction”: Avoid assumptions, reduce people-pleasing behaviors, face your fears, make decisions, acknowledge that starting is easy but closing is hard, and self-reinforce by rewarding yourself. Each strategy is explained in detail with examples from the author’s work with clients, quotes from experts in her field, and cited data. It is possible to make progress without the help of a live therapist, but it may be more difficult to break certain habits, such as people-pleasing. However, some of the techniques are easy to understand and put into practice, such as avoiding “negative forecasting” and rewarding oneself for achievements. A live therapist can be beneficial in helping to set aside assumptions based on a lifetime of experiences, but it is still possible to make progress without one. Ultimately, the goal is to live a life of satisfaction, and these techniques can help readers get closer to that goal.
