A romantic story in the style of Jane Austen, with a hint of enchantment added.
By Geraldine Burrows ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 1, 2023
Annis Fulton (nee Robson) is a Devonshire witch, descended from a long line of magical protectors of the Robson land. She is the most powerful witch of her generation and those preceding it, and was trained from youth in the ancient arts of her ancestors. To save her family’s land, she enters into a short, abusive marriage, only for her husband to die suddenly shortly thereafter. With her wit and witchery, Annis turns the prospects of her family’s failing estate around, thwarting the plans of Capt. Lord Nicholas Ryder, a prospective buyer. Years later, Annis and her sister Clare travel to London, where Clare is to be presented to society in hopes of finding a wealthy husband. Annis’ powers are weakened in the city, as it is home to blood magic. Ryder re-enters their lives, still bitter at his previous loss to Annis, and begins to pursue her with much impropriety. The romance between Ryder and Annis is reminiscent of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, with a focus on consensual kink. Burrows does a passable job of making it clear that both parties are truly consenting, and the contextualizing of the setting is another high point of the novel. However, some verisimilitude could have been sacrificed to avoid using a slur for Romani people.
