An occasionally amusing but overly long narrative of a business success story told from a supportive perspective.

Emily Weiss was a driven and ambitious individual from a young age, and her passion for fashion led her to an internship at Ralph Lauren in high school. After a stint at Teen Vogue and a cameo on MTV’s The Hills, Weiss launched her style blog Into the Gloss in late 2010. With the help of a venture capitalist, she used the blog as a platform to launch her own e-commerce site and the Glossier line. Weiss focused on promotion and strategy to build her customer base, and her luxury beauty brand became a “unicorn” with a clothing line in 2019. She stepped down as CEO in 2022.
Journalist Meltzer’s book This Is Big and Girl Power chronicles Weiss’ journey to becoming an industry mogul. The author paints Weiss as a shrewd and determined entrepreneur, but the tone of the book is overly gushing and admiring. Meltzer’s relationship with Weiss is described as “warmly professional,” but the text often reads like an infomercial. The author recounts a meeting with Weiss, writing, “Her confidence was striking. She seemed to always know what to say.” While Weiss is an intriguing subject, many readers may wish for a more evenhanded approach.
