For over a century, Black Americans have been fighting for civil rights, with only occasional assistance from whites. The Black community has been the driving force behind this struggle, creating institutions such as the Black church and even street gangs to further their cause. In some cases, whites have become allies for political reasons, such as John F. Kennedy needing Black votes or Franklin Roosevelt needing to avoid protests while mobilizing support for World War II. However, white resistance to civil rights has been far more common. After World War I, Black veterans were met with a wave of lynchings from whites who saw their service as a threat. Despite advances since the 1960s, racial discrimination is still a reality in America. This is why true, steadfast white allies are needed to ensure that economic progress goes hand in hand with equal political rights.
