A captivating tale for dinosaur enthusiasts and those who doubt the value of libraries.
By A.G. Allen ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 20, 2023
Mrs. Barker’s third grade class is in for a surprise whe
n they visit the library in Allen’s picture book. Alyssa is not a fan of the library, and is skeptical when Mrs. Barker tells her there are dinosaurs there. To her surprise, when Mrs. Barker opens a book about prehistoric creatures, a stegosaurus jumps out and starts eating the library’s plants. Every time the teacher turns the page, a different dinosaur appears and plays with the kids. Alyssa decides to try it herself and grabs the book, accidentally releasing a velociraptor and a T-rex. The children panic, but Mrs. Barker calmly closes the book and the creatures disappear.
Alyssa then suggests, “Next time, maybe you could pick a book on koalas.” Cordova’s illustrations are full of life and color, and the characters have a range of skin tones, with Alyssa’s being pale white and Mrs. Barker’s being brown. The story could have included more information about the dinosaurs, but it is still entertaining enough to encourage readers to look them up at their local library.
