Grieving novelist Rose Quinlan is looking for a fresh start and decides to take a vacation to St. Croix, which she and her late husband had planned together. Her agent, Marcy Todd, suggests she go missing while she’s there to generate interest in her books. Rose reluctantly agrees and soon finds herself at a local dive bar called The Salty Dog Tavern, where she wins the bar in a poker game.
Her estranged brother, Ian Cartwright, then attempts to murder her and claim her estate. He blackmails Benny Richardson, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois, to do his bidding. However, when Benny meets Rose in person, he’s immediately drawn to her, which changes his perspective. Boston’s novel is a complex tale that combines romance, thriller, and family elements. Rose is a compelling character with sensitive characterization that will keep readers engaged as she embarks on her journey of transformation. Despite some uneven pacing and excessive exposition, the novel is an enjoyable read.
