Este is excited to receive a legacy scholarship to her late father’s school, Radcliffe Prep, and is not deterred by the rumors of it being haunted. Upon touring the library, she meets the mysterious Mateo, who takes her to a restricted area to find a book about Fades. However, Mateo disappears with the book, leaving Este in danger of being expelled. In order to make up for her mistake, she works night shifts and follows clues left by her father about the missing pages in the book.
With time running out, the Fades in the library are now hunting Este. The story is full of lyrical prose and a sweet enemies-to-lovers romance, but some plot elements may be confusing and the villain is easy to spot. The main characters are all white, but some racial diversity is hinted at in secondary characters. Despite some practical issues that may pull readers out of the story, Este is determined to uncover her father’s secrets and find a way to eliminate the Fades.
