Zaira Citlali is a young woman with a destiny to save the universe. She is the last nightweaver, a being with the power to use music to create life. In order to do this, she must awaken the power of creator god Indigo, who has been reborn in her body.
To do this, she must enlist the help of pilot Wesley Daniels, an Andarran empath. But first, she must escape the Ilori Empire, which is allied with god of Destruction Ozvios and wants to sacrifice her.
The novel interweaves Zaira and Wesley’s first-person narratives with podcast transcripts, song lyrics, and other interludes. It is a story filled with introspection, humor, suspenseful twists, and fully developed characters. The intricate worldbuilding details and plot elements are seamlessly and cleverly interwoven.
Wesley falls for Rubin Rima, a podcaster whose characterization evokes hilarity and compassion. The novel speaks to real-life experiences of colonization and trauma through its Black protagonists, whose experiences propel them toward restored faith in humanity. Zaira is a wonderfully body-positive lead, described as “thick, strong, and sturdy”.
In order to restore balance in the universe, Zaira must bring all the planets together and defeat Ozvios and the Ilori emperor in an intergalactic war. She must learn to awaken Indigo’s power within herself and use it to save the universe.
