A novice British soldier finds himself in the midst of the Battle of France in Saint’s debut military thriller. It is May 1940, and 2nd Lt. Tennyson Drake is on a reconnaissance mission in Belgium’s Ardennes Forest. When the German First Panzer Division suddenly appears and kills Drake’s commander, he is left to lead the remaining survivors on the wrong side of the battle line. All he has is a notebook with a drawing of a raven and pages of code. With no orders or instructions, Drake must decipher the meaning of the notebook and complete the mission his unit was sent to do. Saint’s writing is fast-paced and gripping, and his descriptions of the battle are vivid. As Drake and his unit make their way to Sedan, they encounter a French defensive line with barbed wire and machine gun posts, and soldiers running back in fear. Saint has crafted a thrilling story that captures the intensity of the real-life battle. Though some may take issue with certain liberties taken, fans of World War II films will be sure to enjoy this cinematic offering.
