A moving tale of aspiration, kinship, and disappointment.
By Robert Maynor ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 22, 2023
Grady Hayes, a 15-year-old high school football player, never had a favorite team because he viewed the sport as work. His teammates discussed scholarships and prospects with a mix of optimism and realism. Grady was playing in a game against Gadsden when he injured his leg, and it took a week for the doctors to diagnose the rare broken bone.
This diagnosis left Grady feeling isolated from his family and friends, and he began to take pills and hang out with a classmate who encouraged his more dangerous behaviors. Maynor’s novel captures Grady’s depression and alienation, and his father’s arrival late in the story adds a new layer of complexity. Despite Grady’s tendency to be more reactive than proactive, the novel’s realistic details help to balance this out.
