Calvin Hughes is a high school junior living in West Shelby, a marshy town in Orleans County, New York. When he was five, he had a strange encounter with a hooded figure that left him with the ability to see colored energy clouds around people, which reflect their emotions and often predict their behavior. He has never told anyone about his ability, except his sister Eva, who is now a senior in high school. His classmate Star McClellan is the only one who isn’t scared of him, and they have a connection. Star has her own secret – she can see visions of the future, including one that shows Cal drowning while trying to save her life. To prevent this from happening, Star pushes Cal away.
Despite this, Cal is determined to help Star by finding out what happened to her four-year-old sister who disappeared. In Werbitsky’s YA fantasy debut, readers get to experience the everyday struggles of teenage life, as well as the supernatural elements of the story. Cal and Eva’s characters are unique and refreshing, and the story moves at a good pace. The supernatural elements are left unresolved, which could be disappointing if the book is read as a stand-alone, but it also leaves room for a sequel.
